Our key sustainability issues
To ensure we direct our resources where they can have maximum benefit, we have identified our key sustainability impacts.
In 2005, we conducted a review of our sustainability impacts to identify those that most concern our stakeholders and to which we can make a real difference. The review involved consultation with the Board and all our business units, together with the output of our regular risk reviews and input from our Sustainability Advisory Committee.
The 12 issues we identified are aligned with the four priority areas of the UK Government’s sustainable development strategy, as shown in the sun diagram below. For each issue, we then developed targets and key performance indicators (KPIs). To support our business groups in delivering their targets, we have developed a Sustainability Excellence Model that is built around the 12 issues: for each issue we have identified a vision of excellence as well as four steps that will take us there. This enables us to track the progress of individual business units and identify areas for improvement. This report is structured around the four areas and 12 issues of our sun diagram.
