Community – Corporate objectives and targets

2010 Objectives – To be a recognised leader (top three in each business sector) for the positive impact we have on the communities with which we work.

2004 Target – Finalise the Community Engagement Strategy.

Carillion is developing a holistic approach to working with communities by:
• Helping communities help themselves.
• Contributing to the quality of life for the communities in which we work.
• Delivering on our promises.
• Developing proactive, sustainable relationships with our customers, communities, partners and suppliers.
• Delivering high quality services within a safe and sustainable environment.

The Carillion Framework has been developed to give guidance and ideas on how businesses can engage with the local community.

A key part of this is ensuring that we have meaningful consultation and dialogue with our stakeholders. This might be our clients, partners, communities or our own people and dialogue might include, for example, the internet, meetings, newsletters.

We received a 100% score for this target.

2004 Target – Five inspiring examples of our active community engagement.

We use Case Records to collate and communicate best practice from our projects. By highlighting particularly successful community engagement we hope to motivate other parts of the business to get involved, identify the business benefit of these activities and share the good work that is happening every day. For example:

We received a 100% score for this target.

The following information was presented to the auditor:

• Sustainability week – various supporting documents

• BiTC Company of the Year award 2003 (2003/4) + supporting evidence from website

• Work with Guide Dogs for the Blind in Thanet (supporting documents inc. correspondence, material from website and short video.

• Royal Parks case record - design for disabilities.

• Case record for URS litter pick. - 2 members of staff dressed as Wombles travelled on the trains collecting litter and communicating about sustainability week with passengers.

• Sustainability and health and safety workshop at Redland Hill, Bristol (visit to local school to raise awareness of the dangers of building sites)

• Evidence of the construction of a garden for a cancer hospice in Norton Bridge

• Evidence of 2 staff members involvement in a litter pick (on World Environment Day) – from website

• Plus numerous other examples including school presentations, nature trail design, biodiversity work, a range of highway maintenance initiatives, and community investment

Auditor’s note:
This target has been exceeded as there are more that 5 inspiring examples. Inspiring both within and outside the company.

2004 (&2005) Standard – Contribute at least 1% of profits to community activities

We continue to contribute over 1% of our profits to environmental and community initiatives, allowing us to be part of the Business in the Community Per Cent Club. Our contributions include in kind contribution, of staff time and experience or donations of materials, and direct monetary investment to individual community groups or through co-ordinated charities and organisations.
BITC have published results for 2003 and will be collecting data for 2004 in August 2005 for publication in Oct/Nov 2005.

2005 Target – Produce guidance for, and roll out Community Engagement Framework with particular focus on schools and local authority roads.

2005 Standard – Each Business group to produce inspiring examples of our active community engagement.
