2004 Target – By end of year, Sustainability will be a key “energising” part of Carillion’s Graduate recruitment process – “grasping hearts and minds”.

Our people are our key resource to ensure we continue to develop into a sustainable business. We need to attract and retain people that understand and are open to learn about the opportunities of thinking and working sustainably. Attracting graduates in this way has been with a diverse programme:
• Process set up for measuring the influence of sustainability in the decision to join Carillion. This has been implemented for 2003 and 2004 intake. For results click here.
• Redesigned Graduate brochure for 2005 intake attraction campaign that emphasises our commitment to sustainability.
• Embraced sustainability message in all marketing activities (e.g. Hobsons, Prospects, Website).
• Educated and motivated new Graduate recruitment team
• Dedicated day to Sustainability and Health and Safety at the 2004 Graduate induction event.

We achieved a score of 100% for this target.

The following information was presented to the auditor:
• For Carillion internal purposed the target was broken down into 6 sub-targets
• Graduate brochure redesigned to emphasise commitment to sustainability (including CD - Making Tomorrow a Better Place
• Recruitment and sustainability presentation (PowerPoint slides)
• Timetable demonstrating that the graduate induction process incorporates sustainability
• Information from careers section on website containing sustainability and ethics
• Sustainability presentation to graduate team
• Details of graduate recruitment publications
• Various employee profiles
• Sustainability survey questionnaire and examples of responses which demonstrated that many of the graduates had considered sustainability as a key factor in joining Carillion and many of those that did not would still like to be involved in sustainable development.

2004 Carillion Standard (& 2005) – All Carillion employees to have an appraisal at least once a year.

We recognise the importance of two way dialogue with our employees and continue to target 100% delivery of appraisals, first introduced as a plc target in 2003

2005 Target – Improve satisfaction of our people:
1) Deliver internal communications plan
2) Measure satisfaction of our people using quarterly surveys and great debate to demonstrate improvements
3) Revitalise Carillion Values

2005 Target – Produce an integrated strategy to reduce “churn” for recently hired monthly employees.

2005 Standard – Sustainability will be a key “energising” part of Carillion’s Graduate recruitment process – “grasping hearts and minds”.

We recognise the benefits of our sustainable, ethical and responsible approach in attracting staff and are therefore continuing to monitor this “differentiator” in recruitment.
