Welcome to Carillion’s 2004 Sustainability Report

Our 5th annual report on our sustainability programme, this report provides information on our environmental, social and economic performance during 2004 and covers all our operating businesses, both within the UK and overseas.

Highlights

In the BITC Corporate Responsibility Index we achieved a score of 90%, making us the leading company in the construction and materials sector
Our Accident Frequency Rate (AFR) was 0.37 per 100,000 worked hours in 2004 (2003: 0.34). Tragically, there were nine fatalities in 2004 and 69 major injuries.

We achieved an average score of 90% for our 2004 Sustainability Targets, scoring 100% in 8 of our 11 plc targets.

Our Carillion Natural Habitats Fund continues to work in partnership with The Wildlife Trusts and has now supported 19 projects across the UK since 2001
We continue to contribute over 1% of our profits to environmental and community initiatives, allowing us to be part of the Business in the Community Per Cent Club
We reduced the CO2 emissions in our car fleet by 25%
We have signed up to the WWF-UK Forest & Trade Network
On 10 sites, we diverted between 20% and 77% of waste from landfill through re-use and recycling
614 employees were presented with Carillion Values Awards in 2004 for their achievements and for "going that extra step"

Reporting

This report follows current best practice, including the ACCA Environmental, Social and Sustainability Reporting on the World Wide Web Guidance and the Turnbull Report. These guidance documents have assisted us in clearly demonstrating the sustainability improvements that have occurred within our businesses and their related projects during 2004.
