Case Record – Recycling at Head Office

Issue

Although we had been doing some recycling in our Head Offices there was little awareness or co-ordination of the process as a whole. We also recognized the potential to do more to reduce the amount of office waste that ended up as landfill.

Solution

1. Awareness.
The new recycling scheme was put in place on every floor in the building and the only way for it to work effectively was for everyone to understand the issues and responsibilities of dealing with their waste properly. Through our Safety and Environmental Champions we rolled out the principles of managing our waste, focusing on the 3 R’s – reduce, re-use, recycle.

2. The recycling scheme
Working with our recycling contractor we identified the waste streams that could be recycled and the process for collection. Recycling stations were set up on each floor –branded orange to attract attention – with colour coded bins for each type of waste. With the support of our Safety and Environment Champions, our Waste Technician and helpline we hope everyone will realise the importance and effectiveness of recycling. Monthly reports for each floor will make sure we are on track and perhaps encourage some healthy competition!
