Activity:

As part of Carillion Building’s ongoing activities in Bristol, we are currently working in long-term partnership with Connexions West of England and two local schools; Bailey’s Court Primary School and Marlwood School.

The partnership sees us working with each of these schools to support their delivery of the curriculum however we can; this involves the undertaking of one initiative per term with the schools. Such community engagement not only demonstrates Carillion’s long-term commitment to the city of Bristol and to the workforce of the future, but also raises the profile of the construction industry. Our aim is to contribute to generating interest in the construction industry among young people.

Most recently, we worked with Bailey’s Court Primary School’s pupils on significant ground improvements, including a bog garden, a pond, and a bird garden. Across a week, the whole team from Carillion’s Bristol office participated in these activities, working with all 361 children (aged between 4 and 11 years old) during the course of the week. The initiative not only benefited the school in terms of our labour, but also interaction with outside agencies stimulated the children’s interest greatly.

Marlwood School is a pilot “21st Century Science” school, and as such we are collaborating with them in providing a real-life perspective to their learning. We have delivered interactive talks with these students, primarily a class of 28 students undertaking the “21st Century Science” GCSE course, in such topics as air pollution, urban regeneration, and material choices, providing a perspective from the construction industry of the practical relevance of the subjects. This will be ongoing throughout 2004.

Connexions West of England have supported us in the development of these successful partnerships, and we have also discussed other areas in which Carillion can provide expertise and support in the improvement of learning across schools. We will continue to work closely with Connexions in 2004 in terms of these partnerships and also in other areas in which we can contribute. With regards to Bailey’s Court, this is to include an “Apartment Design Competition” to be organized in connection with The Praedium, a residential project we are currently undertaking in the prestigious Redland area of Bristol. This is highly relevant to the primary school curriculum, and will increase the profile of, and level of interest in, the construction industry

Business Benefits:

• Fostering our commitment to the communities we operate in.
• Encouraging students into engineering.
• Motivating our employees.
