Issue:
Making sure environmental impacts and the proximity of the local community are fully understood and encouraging people to think about the environment as part of mobilising a contract.
|
Solution:
At the Surrey depot they were aware of the many different environmental impacts there activities may have on the local community. They have developed links with their stakeholders to put in place a number of interesting initiatives, including:
• Roadkills – On a monthly basis a spreadsheet is sent to the East Surrey Badger group on road kills that have taken place e.g. date, location, council district. During the pup season they are notified as and when an incident occurs so they can identify whether the badger is female and lactating then go to any known local sets to see if there are any pups
• Pesticide spraying – Instead of traditional methods which sprays everything and anything this method has an onboard monitor which reads the amount of chlorophyll in the vegetation it is passing over and gives a metered dose, thereby reducing the amount of pesticide used.
• Depot Open Days – This was to give the local residents the opportunity to voice their concerns about the depot activities and allowed us to respond to those concerns which were varied from noise to winter maintenance.
• Reversing bleep – Instead of using the traditional bleeper we have gone to a broadband bleeper which makes a shushing noise. When the vehicle is reversing towards you, a warning noise can be heard and when you are not in the direction of travel the noise level is greatly reduced, likewise the overall noise level is reduced.
• Noise screens – Due to the location at Godstone and the proximity of local residents additional acoustic material has been put up along the perimeter fencing with selective planting. This was designed by Nick Jones our soft estates Supervisor, it now means we have year round vegetation which blocks out the visual impact of the activities in the Depot and greatly reduces the sound.
Business Benefits:
• Showing a commitment to the local community
• Supporting innovative ways of working
• Reducing the risk of pollution
• Building partnerships with the local council |
