When it comes to giving a room a makeover, a team from Carillion proved they had the flair and the know-how. In just a day, the team from IS Shared Service transformed a former medical room at a Wolverhampton school into a clean, bright environment to be used as a sensory room by children with learning difficulties and other special needs.
The team of 12 included Chris Roddie, Peter Reynolds, Neil Davies, Catrin Lester, Glyn Jones, Mark Round, Jonathan Brisley, Teresa Gibbs, Roger Francis, Con Geaney, Vanessa Bertram and Stephen Kay, who got involved through the "Business in the Community" organisation.
As an unusual team building exercise, the challenge was to empty and decorate a small medical room at Graisley Primary School, removing a sink, boxing in some electrical kit, blanking out light from a tall window, laying new floor covering and painting a mural. The odd favour was called in from Supply Chain for materials, and all members of the team raided their sheds for tools to complete the task.
Head Teacher Wendy Briscoe was very pleased with the result, commenting "It gives the children a relaxing environment in which to explore the five senses".
The Sensory Room was officially opened in December 2003 by Chief Executive John McDonough.
