Activity:

Carillion took part in the Engineering Education Scheme, part of the Royal Academy of Engineering’s BEST program which aims to attract students into engineering.

Carillion set the team of five students the task of designing a sustainable village, considering environmental, social and economic factors.

The students visited the University of Hertfordshire construction site where we have put many sustainable initiatives in place. They also visited the Eco House at the University of Nottingham which provided useful insight to issues that might be considered.

The culmination of their efforts was assessed at the Birmingham NEC through a presentation, written report and scale model of their village and a home presented to a panel of senior assessors from a variety of senior assessors.

They focused on energy efficiency and the use of renewable resources with the use of working solar panels and wind turbines. Other features included light tubes and wind turbines.

Business Benefits:

• Raising awareness of sustainable design.
• Encouraging graduates into engineering.
