A musical composition, representing a 24 hour cycle on the M25, has been produced with the help of the HA M25 Sphere team. The six-minute track, entitled Motorway, was created by Si Dalton, a student at Winchester Music School in Hampshire.
“The aim of the composition is to represent the type of vehicles and their speeds through different sounds and pitches, and for this I need a copy of a 24-hour cycle from a travel camera” explains Si. CCTV footage of the M25 Sphere was not available so the M25 Sphere team supplied Si with footage from the M4, which, he says, was invaluable in producing the work.
Si continues: “The composition opens about 2pm when the motorway is moving well, but getting busier. The speed of the piece then slows down dramatically as the traffic grinds down to the gridlock of rush hour.
The following section called “frustration” reflects the stress and rage of the people in the jam nd their false sense of hope that they will get moving soon. As the road gets moving again, fast drums represent the drivers accelerating to stay close to the car in front, but have to stop again suddenly. The drums gradually fill into the section bringing the motorway back to its moving speed”
In the final 10 seconds the music fades to silence to denote night and the absence of any cars at all.
