Provisions
suggest that organisations adopt a holistic approach to
business risk management, setting clear expectations that
businesses should measure and report periodically their
health and safety performance. The objective being, to
cause organisations to set and assess progress towards
improvement targets and diagnose problems in the context
of continuous improvement.
In real terms, this means that health
and safety is deemed as a strategic issue and performance
should be measured and reported as for other business
issues.
Carillion recognise that addressing
health and safety matters within an organisation is
a fundamental part of good management, covering both
the strategic aspects and operational practice, it should
be integral to every facet of business management and
operational activity. The application of robust management
techniques and forward planning - the setting of policy,
and objectives, organising, controlling and establishing
accountability - should enable the achievement of the
highest levels of safety performance.
The HSC guidance, Health and Safety
in Annual Reports (2001), has been utilised in the preparation
of the following document as Carillion believe that
the aforementioned publication sets a positive framework
for health and safety performance reporting and transparency
in relation to risk management and the associated internal
control mechanisms.
