Changes in 2001
During
2001 we made extensive changes to strengthen the Group's focus
on delivering solutions that exceed our customers' expectations,
improve efficiency and create a culture of growth and success.
We began by restructuring our senior management team to introduce
a slimmer, flatter and m ore effective structure. This was
followed by the launch of a major Business Improvement Programme
that extended the restructuring to other areas of our business
to create a more efficient, customer focused organisation
and to introduce our Valuing the Future programme to help
our people to understand and "live" our core
values.
Restructuring has reduced the number of people working in
certain areas of the business. For example, by introducing
Shared Service Centres to provide a wide variety of support
functions common to all our businesses, we found we could
increase efficiency and effectiveness with fewer people. Managing
these changes in line with our core Values was a priority.
Consequently, every effort was made to consult those effected
to keep them informed throughout the process and to redeploy
people wherever possible.
A willingness to change in order to be
more responsive to the needs of our customers is vital to
the growth and success of our business and therefore to all
our stakeholders, including our employees. That growth and
success is reflected in the overall number of people employed
by the Group which increased from over 16,000 to just over
18,000 during 2001.
Organisation
and Management Systems
The business improvement programme
affected all non-operational departments within the group
