10 Point Plan

  1. Choose cars with lower CO2 emissions – and save money in your tax bill
  2. Cut the amount of journeys you make – can the business be dealt with by phone, fax, email, or video conferencing for example
  3. Share your journey wherever possible
  4. Cut out short journeys by walking – driving whilst the engine is cold with the auto choke engaged seriously compromises fuel consumption.
  5. Drive off as soon as possible after starting the engine – it will warm up quicker when the car is moving. A warm engine uses fuel more efficiently
  6. Drive at slower speeds – travelling at 70 mph can use up to 30% more fuel than at 50 mph
  7. Restrict the use of air conditioning – this significantly increases fuel consumption
  8. Regularly check tyre pressures – if a tyre is 30% under-inflated it can increase fuel consumption by four percent and more than halve tyre life
  9. Ensure your car is serviced regularly
  10. Lose weight! Cutting out unnecessary weight such as items kept in the boot which are only needed for specific journeys will also reduce fuel consumption.
